The Cuckoo Girls

Well, so far these girls are affectionately and collectively called just "The Cuckoo Girls".  They all look so similar that it is a little difficult to individually name them.  We do use leg bands so we can identify individual girls when needed.

These girls arrived at Hummingbird Hollow on October 30th after a very short shipping time.  They arrived less hungry and less picked at than the first 7 girls.  The Cuckoo Girls had quite a little "settling in" period to endure.  The older girls picked on them a bit and chased them around the run a little.  But truly things went pretty smoothly considering that the older girls got here mid September.  It took about 3 weeks for them to work out the new pecking order.

The Cuckoo Girls are leg band #'s
76, 79, 86, 90, 91

#90 is now named Martha after the first "First Lady" since she was the first Cuckoo Marans to lay an egg.  Even though in those days the president's wife wasn't referred to as "First Lady".  :)

October 30th, 2013 - The Cuckoo Girls arrive
December 16, 2013 - #90 spotted in the nest box
December 20th, 2013 - Martha laid the most beautiful dark brown egg today!  Prettiest egg so far!
December 27th, 2013 - First egg laid by #76 making today our first 3 egg day!
January 14th, 2014 - #79 has a bad sore on the back of her head.  :(  It looks like it is scabbed over and healing ok.  Not sure what happened, but I will keep an eye on it.
January 16th, 2014 - #79 laid a cute little speckled egg this morning. The shell is so thin that the egg broke as she was laying.
