Oprah Orpington

Meet Oprah Orpington

Leg Band # - 96

I had Orpingtons in my very first flock of chickens and had to have a couple in my new flock.  Now that the new pullets have been here for a few weeks I am quickly remembering exactly why I love these birds.  They are so big and have beautiful "fluffy butts".  (If you are a chicken lover you understand the "fluffy butts" term)  They are also naturally docile and trusting and very inquisitive.

Oprah was my very first pullet to get a name.  She was the first pullet to come up and eat treats from my hands and the first pullet to jump up onto my lap for a treat of dried meal worms.  I wanted to name her after a brave woman and I thought Oprah was perfect.  Oprah has quickly become one of my favorites and has a very special place in my heart.

I can tell her apart from my other Buff because Oprah has a darker beak.  And she is generally the first to greet me.

Be sure to check back for future updates on Oprah and check the other pages for updates on our other girls.

September 12th, 2013 - Oprah arrived at Hummingbird Hollow Hen House.  She was ordered from Murray McMurray Hatchery as a started pullet.  She was between 15 and 20 weeks old when she arrived.

September 14th, 2013 - Oprah ate from my hand.
September 20th, 2013 - Oprah and Gilda jump up on my knees for mealworms.
December 12th, 2013 - Oprah gives us our very first egg.  It is hard to explain the pure joy and happiness I felt today finding this beautiful little egg in the far North nest box.
